What is the Difference between Chocolate and Cacao, or is it Cocoa?

What is the Difference between Chocolate and Cacao, or is it Cocoa?

In Dutch we have an expression, I can’t make chocolate out of it, which basically means I don’t get it. Well, I couldn’t make chocolate out of the difference between chocolate and cacao. And then I discovered there is also cocoa. Time for some investigation!

Women and chocolate are an infamous combination. It’s our favorite comfort food. And given all the rave articles in the women’s magazines in recent years, most of us no longer feel guilty about being addicted to chocolate.

In recent years, the properties of chocolate have also been scientifically researched. Sometimes it is said that you should eat more chocolate because of all the benefits. What are those benefits?

Animal Collagen vs Plant Collagen – Is there any Difference?

Animal Collagen vs Plant Collagen - Is there any Difference?

I always thought it was collagen, just that one word. I hadn’t the faintest idea there is a difference between animal collagen vs plant collagen.

Moreover, collagen had a bad reputation in my mind because of the ads. You might know which ads I mean: Look 20 years younger by using our product with Collagen XXL. I distrusted the claims and I hated the implication I didn’t look good the way I was.

The worst one was a promo on TV. Imagine the scene: a grandmother is happily playing with her grandson who is laughing and having fun as well. All of a sudden he stops in mid play, points an accusing finger at her face and says: Gran, why does your skin look so awkward?

What is the Best Time for Supplements, Water and Food?

What is the Best Time for Supplements, Water and Food?

For a lot of habits we develop routines. That way we build in a control system so we don’t forget to do what we planned. Usually we take supplements when we have a meal. We won’t forget to take them then, and often the effect of supplements is better when they are taken with food. Is there a best time for supplements, water and food?

Much of this article is about how I handle supplements, food and water. Although my behavior is based on scientific research, you can say that these texts are my opinion.

As I often say on this website, for any scientific research that is positive about something, there is research that is negative. That’s why I try everything and see how my body reacts. I let that guide me in my decisions.

Review: Solgar, not just any supplements brand

Review: Solgar, not just any supplements brand

Stay Healthy with Supplements is about additions to your food that are beneficial. Usually we think of capsules and tablets when we think about supplements. Yet, I consider spices, herbs and the vitamins and minerals in food as much a supplement as those ones.

In some situations it is advisable or necessary to take a capsule or another form of supplement. In How many different forms of supplements are available? you can read about the different types of supplements.

In How to Choose Supplements that are Beneficial I wrote how you can make your personal choice of supplements.

This review is about my preferred brand: Solgar.

5 + 10 Essential Supplements for Energy

Essential Supplements for Energy

Getting everything your body needs through food is the best way. For one of my other websites I wrote an article about the food that gives you energy. Yet there can be all kinds of reasons why you need more energy than food can deliver. In that case supplements are a practical and natural replacement for or an addition to food. What are the essential supplements for energy?

As with any advice – no matter in what area – for every wildly enthusiastic recommendation there are opinions that discourage or even deny it. I love coffee in the morning and had several warnings from friends that coffee is bad for me. And to some extent they were right. If I drink coffee after 1pm, surely I will have problems getting to sleep that night.

Nowadays those same friends tell me coffee is good for aging people. 🙂

My point always is: listen to your body carefully and you will know what product is best for you. What works for me might not have the same result for you.

Review: Your Super – Superfood in a Cardboard Can?

Review: Your Super

Until a few years ago I had never heard of superfoods. Probably nobody had. 🙂 And all of a sudden they are the talk of the town. Are they really that super and what can be the benefits of superfood?

This article will be about superfood, and is a review about Your Super that sells superfood in the form of powders.

Be aware that superfood is a marketing term. There is no scientific research to back up some of the claims that are made about superfood. A one-sided diet is never healthy. So I do eat superfoods myself, but always together with a variety of other (in my eyes) healthy food.

Best Supplements to Help You Sleep at Night

Best Supplements to Help You Sleep at Night

For one of my other websites I wrote a general article about How to sleep better and faster when you’re aging. There I listed 10 things I do to improve the quality of my sleep. One of those things is taking a sleep supplement.

Mind you, I don’t take them for a long period of time. I am especially careful with Melatonin. Some say Melatonin should be put on the list of prescription drugs. That’s why I only take them during periods when I am having a hard time sleeping. For instance during the hot summers over here in Spain.

Most of these supplements to help you sleep have the advantage that they contain a lot of antioxidants. These limit cellular damage, thus slowing down the aging process. That’s a nice bonus, right?

Is High Cholesterol Dangerous or is that too Bluntly said?

Is High Cholesterol Dangerous or is that too Bluntly said?

The first time my husband and I went to the doctor for a blood and urine test we were past 60. Nowadays I regret I haven’t done any testing before that. Because then I would be able to see if there was a pattern.

Apart from discovering my vitamin D deficiency, I found out my cholesterol levels were way too high, as were my husband’s. On my question “Is high cholesterol dangerous?” the doctor immediately suggested taking statins and to do that the rest of our lives. Statin is a cholesterol reducing medicine. We weren’t enthusiastic about this suggestion.

First of all because we try to avoid medicines as much as we can. Second, because half of our friends that are taking statins have side effects like walking stiffly. Not a very attractive prospect.

The Benefits of Calcium for our Body

The Benefits of Calcium for our Body

When my mother was 87 she broke her first hip, because she fell off her bike. Three years later she fell out of bed and broke the other one. Until her first hip fracture, my mother never used any medication or supplements. I am not even sure her food was varied enough after my father passed away years earlier. Maybe she had a Calcium deficit, I don’t know.

It made me study the benefits of Calcium thoroughly, because the healing process and the aftermath were difficult. And if I can prevent that happening to me, all the better. When you are aging, osteoporosis (bone loss or bone weakening) is a huge risk, especially for women.

Calcium is a mineral highly needed for building and maintaining the bones and teeth. Calcium helps against osteoporosis when we are aging. It is necessary for the proper functioning of the nerves and muscles. It helps blood to clot; in the absence of Calcium no blood clotting is possible.  And it is necessary for the transport of other minerals in the body, such as sodium, potassium and magnesium.
