Review: Your Super – Superfood in a Cardboard Can?

Review: Your Super

Until a few years ago I had never heard of superfoods. Probably nobody had. 🙂 And all of a sudden they are the talk of the town. Are they really that super and what can be the benefits of superfood?

This article will be about superfood, and is a review about Your Super that sells superfood in the form of powders.

Be aware that superfood is a marketing term. There is no scientific research to back up some of the claims that are made about superfood. A one-sided diet is never healthy. So I do eat superfoods myself, but always together with a variety of other (in my eyes) healthy food.

Best Supplements to Help You Sleep at Night

Best Supplements to Help You Sleep at Night

For one of my other websites I wrote a general article about How to sleep better and faster when you’re aging. There I listed 10 things I do to improve the quality of my sleep. One of those things is taking a sleep supplement.

Mind you, I don’t take them for a long period of time. I am especially careful with Melatonin. Some say Melatonin should be put on the list of prescription drugs. That’s why I only take them during periods when I am having a hard time sleeping. For instance during the hot summers over here in Spain.

Most of these supplements have the advantage that they contain a lot of antioxidants. These limit cellular damage, thus slowing down the aging process. That’s a nice bonus, right?

Is High Cholesterol Dangerous or is that too Bluntly said?

Is High Cholesterol Dangerous or is that too Bluntly said?

The first time my husband and I went to the doctor for a blood and urine test we were past 60. Nowadays I regret I haven’t done any testing before that. Because then I would be able to see if there was a pattern.

Apart from discovering my vitamin D deficiency, I found out my cholesterol levels were way too high, as were my husband’s. On my question “Is high cholesterol dangerous?” the doctor immediately suggested taking statins and to do that the rest of our lives. Statin is a cholesterol reducing medicine. We weren’t enthusiastic about this suggestion.

First of all because we try to avoid medicines as much as we can. Second, because half of our friends that are taking statins have side effects like walking stiffly. Not a very attractive prospect.

The Benefits of Calcium for our Body

The Benefits of Calcium for our Body

When my mother was 87 she broke her first hip, because she fell off her bike. Three years later she fell out of bed and broke the other one. Until her first hip fracture, my mother never used any medication or supplements. I am not even sure her food was varied enough after my father passed away years earlier. Maybe she had a Calcium deficit, I don’t know.

It made me study the benefits of Calcium thoroughly, because the healing process and the aftermath were difficult. And if I can prevent that happening to me, all the better. When you are aging, osteoporosis (bone loss or bone weakening) is a huge risk, especially for women.

Calcium is a mineral highly needed for building and maintaining the bones and teeth. Calcium helps against osteoporosis when we are aging. It is necessary for the proper functioning of the nerves and muscles. It helps blood to clot; in the absence of Calcium no blood clotting is possible.  And it is necessary for the transport of other minerals in the body, such as sodium, potassium and magnesium.

How many different forms of supplements are available?

We usually think of dietary supplements in the form of capsules or tablets. Nowadays there are many different forms of supplements. For a big part it depends on your own preference which form is best to choose. In this overview I will mention a few pros and cons if there are any.

Eat healthy food

A rough way of classification in form is:

  • Tablets and Capsules
  • Powders
  • Liquids

A way of classification in type is:

  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Enzymes
  • Fatty Acids
  • Proteins
  • Fibers
  • (Herbs/Botanical)

Maybe strange on a website that talks about supplements, yet one important aspect of supplements is that it hardly ever can replace a healthy variety of food. Have a look at Use the Colors of Food to Benefit your Health.

How to Choose Supplements that are Beneficial

How to Choose Supplements

What aspects can we consider when looking for supplements because we have a deficiency of an element? How to choose supplements that are beneficial for our health, for our wallet, but also for our environment?

First of all you must be certain that you have a deficiency at all. This might seem stating the obvious, but even though supplements are no medicines, they shouldn’t be taken lightly. So make sure you base your choice on a medical test.

Make your health priority number one

We are getting older than ever. Unfortunately, we also get ill earlier in life. Air pollution, fast food and a sedentary lifestyle undermine our well-being.

Vitamin D Deficiency despite a lot of Sun?

Vitamin D Deficiency despite a lot of Sun?

“How is that even possible? I just got back from 3 months at the South coast of Spain?”

At that time I was living in the Netherlands and had been traveling to the sun in winter time. I was in the GP’s office to get the results of my general medical test and just didn’t understand how I could have a Vitamin D deficiency despite a lot of sun I had been in.

The doctor explained to me that an aging skin does not absorb as much Vitamin D as a younger skin and suggested taking supplements. Until then, I was very reluctant to take any supplement at all. I thought that a healthy diet should be sufficient.

Well, it was my choice; to stubbornly follow my original beliefs or to look at the scientific results and act accordingly.

Does Vitamin C boost your Immune System in a substantial way?

Does Vitamin C boost your Immune System?

One of the best methods to increase our immune system is to take care of hygiene. Equally important is to make sure we eat and drink healthy stuff, like organic produce and clean water.
Sometimes our body demands extra, so the question is: does Vitamin C boost your immune system?

Linus Pauling is the only scientist so far that received 2 Nobel prizes in 2 different areas (Chemistry and Peace) not shared with somebody else. In 1970 he wrote Vitamin C, the Common Cold and the Flu. In this book he emphasizes the importance of Vitamin C. Grams of it.

Recommended versus Exceptional

Every country has a food agency that hands out lots of recommendations. The recommendations are based on averages. Averages of quantities they know will be sufficient. But also averages of quantities they suspect will be most followed.
