Until a few years ago I had never heard of superfoods. Probably nobody had. 🙂 And all of a sudden they are the talk of the town. Are they really that super and what can be the benefits of superfood? 

This article will be about superfood, and is a review about Your Super that sells superfood in the form of powders.

Be aware that superfood is a marketing term. There is no scientific research to back up some of the claims that are made about superfood. A one-sided diet is never healthy. So I do eat superfoods myself, but always together with a variety of other (in my eyes) healthy food.

For one of my other websites I wrote a general article about How to sleep better and faster when you’re aging. There I listed 10 things I do to improve the quality of my sleep. One of those things is taking a sleep supplement.

Mind you, I don’t take them for a long period of time. I am especially careful with Melatonin. Some say Melatonin should be put on the list of prescription drugs. That’s why I only take them during periods when I am having a hard time sleeping. For instance during the hot summers over here in Spain. 

Most of these supplements have the advantage that they contain a lot of antioxidants. These limit cellular damage, thus slowing down the aging process. That’s a nice bonus, right?

In the Netherlands we have a snack called Studentenhaver, which roughly translates as Student oats. This is a mix of walnuts, cashew nuts, Brazil nuts, almonds, hazelnuts, raisins and sometimes other dried fruits. This mix is supposed to enhance intelligence, hence the name.

We supplement our food with lots of nuts, not because it would increase our intelligence, but because of all the benefits nuts contain. We rarely eat meat, which is another reason to eat nuts. Although the main reason is that they are delicious. We love nuts.

The Benefits of Calcium for our Body

When my mother was 87 she broke her first hip, because she fell off her bike. Three years later she fell out of bed and broke the other one. Until her first hip fracture, my mother never used any medication or supplements. I am not even sure her food was varied enough after my father passed away years earlier. Maybe she had a Calcium deficit, I don’t know. 

It made me study the benefits of Calcium thoroughly, because the healing process and the aftermath were difficult. And if I can prevent that happening to me, all the better. When you are aging, osteoporosis (bone loss or bone weakening) is a huge risk, especially for women. 

Calcium is a mineral highly needed for building and maintaining the bones and teeth. Calcium helps against osteoporosis when we are aging. It is necessary for the proper functioning of the nerves and muscles. It helps blood to clot; in the absence of Calcium no blood clotting is possible.  And it is necessary for the transport of other minerals in the body, such as sodium, potassium and magnesium.

Organic powders and spices

We all supplement our food, unless you cook totally pure without herbs or spices. Usually we season our food because of the taste, yet spices are also a great source of necessary vitamins and minerals.

As an artist I can’t resist mentioning that spices also make a great dye for paper and fabric. But don’t worry, this article is about how to season food. Although cooking is of course also an artistic process. 🙂

Who decides which spices to use?

I’ll be honest with you, I don’t cook. My husband, Tom, is spoiling me by cooking the most delicious and healthy food you can think of. I am the one researching all the nutritional facts. And eating it, of course!
