Water is one of the 6 essential nutrients, next to carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins and minerals. We can live without food for 43 to 73 days, depending on the climate. But we can only survive 3 to 6 days without water.

When we age the system that indicates that our body needs water or food can be disturbed. We don’t always feel the hunger or thirst signs. That’s why a lot of elderly people end up dehydrated or malnourished.

It’s good to keep a water diary for a couple of weeks to know what you actually drink on a day. Coffee doesn’t count, as the caffeine in the coffee stimulates the kidneys and thus makes the liquid leave your body faster.

A question that popped into my head the other day: Can coffee make you smarter? Or does it take a smart person to drink coffee? A few years ago, coffee was pretty much banned in my environment because it would be bad for us. Nowadays we are obliged to drink it again because it would serve us so well.

My morning coffee is almost sacred. I have 2 cups of black coffee before 11 am and enjoy that immensely. With or without health benefits. 🙂

That used to be different when I was younger. Then I drank coffee all day long, even in the evenings, without giving it much thought. It was just a drink. I can’t even recall if it affected my sleep back then.

I didn’t like the at least 7 months of cold and rain in the Netherlands, but I have to admit, I don’t like those 2 months of intense heat in Spain either.

Although, calculating it is not such a wrong exchange, don’t you agree?

So, when in Spain, do as the Spaniards do, and that is eat watermelon. It’s their preferred choice of thirst quencher. Moreover, there are a lot of advantages to watermelon.

At a health seminar I heard about oil pulling. Not hindered by any kind of knowledge I bought a pot of coconut oil and tried it myself. And concluded that I lack the patience for something like that. Oil pulling is comparable to mouthwash. You have to keep the oil in your mouth for 15-20 minutes and let it swish around.

Finally, wanting to answer the question “Why is coconut oil good for your teeth”, I discovered that coconut oil is 100% saturated fat. Half a year before that I was warned that my cholesterol was too high, and I was panicky about anything leaning towards saturated fat.

In the Netherlands we have a snack called Studentenhaver, which roughly translates as Student oats. This is a mix of walnuts, cashew nuts, Brazil nuts, almonds, hazelnuts, raisins and sometimes other dried fruits. This mix is supposed to enhance intelligence, hence the name.

We supplement our food with lots of nuts, not because it would increase our intelligence, but because of all the benefits nuts contain. We rarely eat meat, which is another reason to eat nuts. Although the main reason is that they are delicious. We love nuts.

Is High Cholesterol Dangerous or is that too Bluntly said?

The first time my husband and I went to the doctor for a blood and urine test we were past 60. Nowadays I regret I haven’t done any testing before that. Because then I would be able to see if there was a pattern.

Apart from discovering my vitamin D deficiency, I found out my cholesterol levels were way too high, as were my husband’s. On my question “Is high cholesterol dangerous?” the doctor immediately suggested taking statins and to do that the rest of our lives. Statin is a cholesterol reducing medicine. We weren’t enthusiastic about this suggestion.

First of all because we try to avoid medicines as much as we can. Second, because half of our friends that are taking statins have side effects like walking stiffly. Not a very attractive prospect.
